Feature Friday- Sweet Note Gluten Free Bagels


It’s the weekend and that means it’s time to eat some bagels!! Gluten free? No problem, Sweet Note Bagels has you covered. I first tried Sweet Note at Grindcore Coffeehouse in Philly, and now I am lucky enough to create this recipe for them!

Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer, picnics and BBQs, so why not start this season off right with this BBQ Bagel Sandwich..

BBQ Sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon chilli sauce
1 teaspoon mustard

Caramelized Onions
Glug of olive oil
Handful of shiitake mushrooms
2 teaspoons of ramp butter
Salt to taste

Bagel Smear
3 Tablespoons of vegan mayo
1-2 teaspoon of hot sauce

Other Yum Factors:
1/2 package of tempeh
2-4 leaves of basil
And of course… 1 Sweet Note Bagel (any savory variety would work, I used plain to bring out all the flavors in between the bagel halves!)

BBQ sauce:
Combine the ketchup, vinegar, chili sauce and mustard and stir until incorporated
Cut the tempeh into rectangular shaped blocks and marinate in the above BBQ, about 15-20 minutes, set aside
Caramelized Onions and Ramp Butter Mushrooms 
Meanwhile, gently sauté the onions for 8-10 minutes, until translucent , set aside
Add the mushrooms to the same pan and cook another 7-10 minutes and add a teaspoon of ramp butter and re incorporate the onions for another minute
Cooking the tempeh
Lightly fry the marinated tempeh, flipping after 3-5 minutes on each side, set aside
Here Comes the Bagel
Cut the bagel in half and toast until brown
Chili Mayo Sauce
Combine the vegan mayo and chili sauce
Putting It All Together:
Smear the vegan mayo and chili mixture on the bagel, stack the tempeh, caramelized onions and mushrooms and top with fresh basil leaves
Top the bagel stacked goodness with the other half of the bagel and take a big bite!

The deep, tangy and fresh flavors will dance in your mouth, second to the excitement of finding gluten free bagels!!
