It’s a new year and that means a lot of buzz around healthier food. So why not swap out dessert for a sweet fruit dish this January? Personally, I am not a huge dessert person, I would always go for an extra appetizer than dessert, but in an effort to eat more fruit, I am finding ways to make it fun, delicious and healthy.
My dad gave me a couple pears yesterday that were perfectly ripe, I was concerned they would bruise in my bag on my way to work, so decided to grill them. Ideally, this would be a great dish to grill on an outside BBQ, but on a chilly NYC evening, a grill pan worked just fine. If you have a grill pan with the lines for nice grill marks, that works best, otherwise a gentle sauté in any pan would work fine.
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1 Tablespoon of cane sugar
Pinch of pink Himalayan sea salt
Optional: Blueberry balsamic
Bring the balsamic, sugar and salt to a boil
Add the blueberry sauce if using
Continue to stir until thick
Meanwhile, heat the grill pan with 2 Table spoons of vegan butter or good quality olive oil (sauté means to cook in a kind of fat, butter or oil works equally well)
Quarter and deseed the pear
Place each piece of pear on the grill pan, lengthwise to achieve the grill marks
