Chinese Style Fire Broccoli

chinesesauceCelebrate a happy and healthy Chinese New Year with this easy steamed broccoli and spiced up dipping sauce. Not only does every Chinese New Year use one of the 12 zodiac animals to mark the year, it also pairs with one of the 5 elements, Gold, Water, Wood, Fire or Earth.

This year it is the year of the  Fire Monkey, meant to bring ambition and adventure. The fire aspect of this year inspired me to spice up this salty and umami style dipping sauce with a pinch of heat. It is the perfect snack or side dish.

Ingredients:
1 Head of broccoli
1/4 cup Tamari sauce
1 clove of garlic
1 inch knob of ginger
1/2 teaspoon liquid aminos, naturally derived from plants and important for cell and organ health
1/2 scallion
A few pinches of chili flakes
Sprinkle of sesame seeds

Method:
Fill a medium sized pot with water and bring to a boil
Trim your broccoli into bite sized florets
Meanwhile, prepare the sauce
Peel and finely chop the garlic
Trim the skin off the ginger and finely chop or grate, watch your fingers!
Combine the Tamari, liquid aminos, garlic and ginger and stir
Cut the green ends of the scallion into small pieces and add to the sauce
Add a pinch or two of chili flakes, pour into a small bowl for dipping and set aside
When the water has boiled, add a glass or metal bowl or double boiler on top of your pot for steaming
Add the broccoli and steam for 5-7 minutes, you want to keep the crunch and bright green color
Remove from heat, arrange on your plate
Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chili flakes
Grab some chopsticks and dip away!
