Homemade Popcorn

Whether you are watching the Oscars this weekend or snuggling up to a movie, this popcorn will make any movie night a winner!
To be honest, I am the first to buy store bought popcorn, and in the defense of store bought popcorn, there are a few new artisan popcorn brands out there killing it, but homemade is always better. I have never made popcorn from scratch. Yes, I used an air fryer in the late 80s, but when my cousin recently asked if I wanted popcorn for a snack and whipped out her solid sauce pan and grabbed the vegetable oil, I was in awe. Her homemade popcorn was so amazing that when I was planning my Oscar party, I knew I had to call her up for the recipe.

For the popcorn:

1/2 cup popcorn kernels
1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Coat the bottom of a medium, solid, sauce pan with vegetable oil, enough to go up to the middle of the kernel, yes, that’t not a lot.
Heat the oil on medium heat and carefully watch for about 5 minutes
Add a couple kernels, checking for the spitting oil, when hot and sizzling, add the popcorn and cover
Do not lift the lid, listen carefully for the popping sound, when there are a couple second between pops, lift and…. your corn should be popped!

I couldn’t wait and peeked, my first popped corn was starring back at me!

Savory Popcorn:
1 Tablespoon Earth Balance butter
2 Tablespoons nutritional yeast
Sprinkle of salt

Pour the melted butter along, nutritional yeast and salt over the popped corn, combine and snack away!

Sweet Popcorn:
*follow the same directions above*

1 Tablespoon Earth Balance butter
1 teaspoon of sugar
Sprinkle of cinnamon

Melt the sugar and butter for about 30 seconds
Pour  the melted butter, sugar, cinnamon over popcorn, combine and serve!

Voila! Sweet and savory popcorn! Just add your favorite flick and enjoy.
