In a time when more and more veggie options are hitting the headlines, it is more exciting than ever to eat out! Ever since I read AM New York’s, Best Veggie Burgers in NYC article, I decided I would start to eat my way through them all, but then I couldn’t stop going back to The Pickle Shack.
The Pickle Shack is an all vegetarian, mostly vegan, bar with tables dotted around near the entrance and a large sitting room in the back. The vibe is friendly, low key and relaxed. The staff offer contagious smiles as they welcome you to feel right at home.
Let’s get right to the menu, the Cornmeal Battered Oyster Mushrooms are unreal. From the first crunch of the batter, to the soft inside these funghi are the star of the show. Paired with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and tangy cocktail sauce, this might be the best dish ever. Warning, the plate in front of you won’t last long.
The Fried Pickles, pictured above to the right, are a must too, I mean it is called The Pickle Shack…. The homemade aioli is creamy with a nice hint of garlic, you might sneak a few spoonfuls alone, it is that good.
On my first visit, I had the Smoked Tofu Banh Mi over salad. What a colorful plate of fresh vegetables, smoked tofu, kimchi and of course a pickle. Each part of the plate contributes to the overall flavors of the salad and brings it all together in a light and vibrate way.
The veggie burger caught my eye and I promised to go back just for that, and it was worth the wait. The veggie and mushroom patty is soft, yet holds a firm texture with deep earthy flavors. All the accompaniments are classic to a burger and make for the perfect bite. No wonder The Pickle Shack is on list after list of the Best Veggie Burgers in NYC, here written by The Village Voice.
